Event Details
Are you aware of the diversity that composes some of the primary cultures of "European Origin" in Connecticut? Are you looking at "Caucasian" commuhnities as "homogenous"? What specific information and skills might you need to become a more culturally competent service provider, to work with and amongst these communities? How do these communities interact with others and what is the implication on behavioral health?
Content: This workshop provides 6 hours of training for those working in a prevention setting in behavioral /mental health. DMHAS' SPF-SIG/BP/ and PFS Grantees are highly encouraged to attend! This training is foundational for your programming.Those involved in prevention program planning, implementation, and evaluation who are seeking more information about working with persons of European descent. This training will deliver information and interactive activities.
• European American Culture in a historical and contemporary context. The multiplicity of European American groups and how these groups have been influenced by history, war and oppression, immigration/migration, family structure, child rearing patterns, communication styles, spirituality and religion, health practices, and poverty.
• Risk and protective factors for the behavioral and mental health of European Americans, with emphasis on the individual groups.
• The impacts of individual European American customs and culture upon wellness and illness in prevention, treatment and recovery. The clinical importance of understanding and addressing the cultural/ethnic differences among European Americans.
• Working with individuals, families and communities: how to communicate effectively and provide respectful and appropriate services and resources.
Methods: Presentation & Dialogue, Audio visuals, Interactive activities & Hands-on exercises.
Class size: This interactive training is limited to 30 participants. Registration open until filled or 1 week prior to event, whichever comes first.

- Lunch is available for $7.00 through this site, or you may bring your own lunch.* Lunch is to be held from 12pm-1pm. A variety of food choices will be served!

*Refunds for the luncheon will not be made past 5 days prior to the event. Refunds prior to this date will be subject to a $1.00 fee.
Tickets are non transferrable. There may be a waiting list for this event and we ask only those that can committ to attending will register for the event. In the case that you need to cancel your registration, we ask that you notify us so that we may offer the seating to those next on the list. Thank you.

ATTENTION PREVENTION PROVIDERS: This is a training for DMHAS funded prevention providers, particularly focused for SPF-SIG/BP and PFS grantees and their members. It will help the interaction on the day of the event, if you can bring your SPF-SIG/ Best Practice/Performance for Success Plans or Program's Cultural Competency Plans with you, or review them prior to attending. That way, you can ensure you are meeting your training needs on how to apply this prevention-oriented information to the "5 Steps" for your specific DMHAS-Funded grant programs. Remember, this is a foundational class that should help you apply theory to your SPF-SIG/BP/PFS practice and steps. If you are not a DMHAS-Funded prevention program provider nor receive these particular program/ grant funds, please contact us with questions.
